We are recruiting at least one Postdoctoral Fellow

Position: Postdoctoral research fellowInstitution: Libin Cardiovascular Institute, Hotchkiss Brain InstituteEmployment location: Calgary, AB, CanadaDuration: Two years (possibility of extension)Start date: ImmediatelySalary: Flexible depending upon experience and accomplishments to date

We are seeking a postdoctoral research fellow to join the translational research team of Dr. Aaron Phillips. Successful applicants will join an interdisciplinary team that includes personnel enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, and MD/PhD programs, as well as biomedical engineering and clinical staff. The team has several international collaborative projects with major partners located in Switzerland and Croatia. Dr. Phillips’ lab is independently supported by Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) Project Grant, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Discovery Grant, Compute Canada, and Rick Hansen Institute. The Phillips Lab uses a combination of integrated physiology and neuroscience, with the aim of deeply understanding autonomic and cardiovascular function. Currently, the laboratory is aimed towards developing a neurostimulation therapy to restore healthy autonomic and cardiovascular function in those living with a spinal cord injury.

Research tools include CLARITY-optimized light-sheet microscopy, sympathetic and brainstem neuronal recordings, telemetry arterial cannulation and sympathetic recording, spinal cord transection/contusion, and a variety of genetic strains (e.g., Th-Cre, PV-Cre). The lab is also employing a novel computational pipeline for managing large data-sets of physiological metrics.

Positions are open for strong candidates with interest in preclinical neuroscience or physiology in the areas of cardiovascular and/or autonomic physiology, and/or biomedical engineering/computer science. Postdoctoral fellows interested in applying should have a minimum of one first-authored paper in a peer-reviewed journal with an impact factor greater than two. Trainees at the Postdoctoral level interested in these areas of research are encouraged to send their CV and a letter of interest to Lisa Mesluk:

To apply, please send the following to the attention of Dr. Aaron Phillips ( (1) Cover letter including statement of research experience and interests, (2) CV, (3) Three letters of reference, (4) Copy of graduate transcript, (5) Writing sample (e.g., chapter of thesis or first author publication).

There is extensive support to progress your career/training. These include numerous fellowships, travel/publication awards, and opportunities for professional development. The Phillips Lab has a strong track-record of trainees securing these awards. Some examples appear below.

$1.65 million in trainee support

Dr. Phillips was recently part of a 10 person team that secured a $1.65 million NSERC CREATE Grant. This program provides scholarships, fellowships and a powerful inter-disciplinary training platform for next-generation neuro-entrepreneurs, neuroscientists, and neuro-engineers.
